The highlight of the sporting and cultural calendar is the Sree Narayana Jayanthi Boat Race (popularly known as Kumarakom Boat Race) held on Vembanad lake during Onam (August/September). Over 1,000 oarsmen participate under various categories in snake boats but the loudest cheers and grand prize are reserved for the spectacular Iruttukuthi in which about 50 oarsmen row at a time. From the incredible athleticism and skill on display aided by vanchippattu (rhythmic songs of the oarsmen) to the vociferous encouragement of the spectators, the revelry of these races is an experience you shouldn't miss out on.
