Constructed between 1857 and 1906, the jail infamously known as Kalapani, is a national memorial and a gritty reminder of the undaunted spirit of Indian freedom fighters against colonial rule. The British used this remote prison to exile Indian political prisoners and keep them in torturous solitary confinement. Visit the gallows for an eerie experience and the former cell of the jail’s most famous resident - freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, who spent 10 years here - which lies at the far end of a long corridor on the third floor of the prison block. The son-et-lumiere show held every evening in the jail compound presents a moving saga of India’s heroic freedom struggle.
