Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib)
Description :
The history of the Golden Temple dates back to the 16th century when the foundation stone was laid by Guru Arjan Dev, fifth of the ten Sikh gurus (spiritual leaders). Over the centuries, the temple has undergone several renovations to become more magnificent. Despite witnessing historic turbulent events, it stands strong as a beacon of hope, resilience and spirituality. The temple is home to the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhism, where important decisions and resolutions concerning the Sikh community are made. Devotees travel from across the world to dip their toes or bathe in the holy waters of Amrit Sarovar – the Pool of the Nectar of Immortality - surrounding the temple, which is believed to have healing properties. Don’t miss out on the evocative palki ceremony, conducted twice a day, when the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy scriptures of the Sikhs) is carried from its resting place in the Akal Takht and back, accompanied by devotional songs.
